Meta is experimenting with AI-generated comments on Instagram, which will allow users to respond to posts without having to create their own.

Some users have reported seeing a “pencil with a star” icon next to the comment section, which when tapped, suggests responses tailored to the post’s content. This feature could increase engagement by lowering the effort required to interact with posts.

Unlike standard chatbots, these AI-generated responses aim to make social media interactions more dynamic by automating engagement. Manoj Harjani, a research fellow at Singapore’s S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), said the feature is designed to simulate human-like responses, encouraging more activity on the platform.

Meta is also developing AI-generated bot profiles that could interact with people across its platforms. These bots would respond to user posts automatically, creating the appearance of growing engagement. If successful, this approach could encourage more human engagement by increasing the number of responses users receive to their posts.

AI-driven engagement strategy

Meta’s strategy echoes broader changes in social media, where automation is becoming increasingly important to user engagement. LinkedIn already offers AI-generated comments, and Gmail proposes automated replies to emails. However, Meta’s way is more advanced because the AI-generated responses are targeted to specific content.

Meta could gain benefits from improved user activity metrics if it increases engagement through AI. More responses to posts could lead to higher visibility in user feeds, encouraging further interactions. This feedback loop has the potential to make Meta’s platform more active, which would help its advertising revenue and data collection.

Meta’s dependency on AI-generated content raises concerns about authenticity. While automated comments might boost engagement, it is unclear whether users will find the interaction meaningful if they know that the responses are not from real people. According to some analysts, if the comments result in a positive feedback loop of engagement, users might overlook the source.

Challenges with AI-generated interaction

There are certain downsides to this approach, though. AI-generated responses could degrade the quality of interactions on the platform, making conversations feel less personal. A flood of automated comments might make genuine human responses harder to stand out, reducing the overall value of engagement.

Furthermore, Meta would need to address potential difficulties with content control and the misuse of AI-generated comments. If AI-generated responses become indistinguishable from human interactions, misinformation, spam, or offensive content could spread more easily. Meta has already faced criticism for how it handles content moderation, raising concerns about whether AI-generated responses would be properly managed.

User response and market implications

The success of AI-generated comments will likely depend on user acceptance. If users find the responses helpful and engaging, the feature could improve overall platform activity. However, if the comments feel forced or artificial, users may disengage, undermining Meta’s strategy.

Meta’s investment in AI-generated content reflects the broader rivalry among social media platforms to increase user engagement. Competitors such as TikTok and Twitter are both looking into AI-driven features to improve user interaction. Meta, however, focuses on automating responses, indicating a more direct attempt to use AI to shape user behaviour.

If AI-generated comments drive increased engagement, Meta could gain an advantage in the competitive social media market. However, balancing automation with authentic human interaction will be key to the long-term success of this strategy.
